Benlysta

Benlysta is a prescription medicine used to treat the symptoms of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus. Benlysta may be used alone or with other medications.

Benlysta belongs to a class of drugs called Rheumatologics.

Belimumab is a human IgG1λ monoclonal antibody specific for soluble human B lymphocyte stimulator protein (BLyS, also referred to as BAFF and TNFSF13B). Belimumab has a molecular weight of approximately 147 kDa. Belimumab is produced by recombinant DNA technology in a murine cell (NS0) expression system.

The recommended intravenous dosage regimen is 10 mg/kg at 2-week intervals for the first 3 doses and at 4-week intervals thereafter. Reconstitute, dilute, and administer as an intravenous infusion over a period of 1 hour.

Benlysta Side Effects

The most common side effects include: 

  • nausea,
  • diarrhea,
  • fever,
  • sore throat,
  • runny or stuffy nose,
  • cough,
  • pain, itching, redness, or swelling where the injection was given,
  • pain in your arms or legs,
  • headache,
  • depressed mood, and
  • sleep problems (insomnia)
